Kevin Neely's Project 510

The now infamous "Severed Head Picture" that's been circulating the net.

The goal for this project was to take advantage of the low weight of the Datsun 510 and insert a high horsepower but reliable engine. Many people have installed rotary engines, V-6 engines, truck engines, V-8 engines, supercharged engines, and other turbocharged engines but the SR20DET seemed like a no brainer. This engine in stock form is a 2.0 liter 4 cylinder engine related to the SE-R engines available in the home market. The only difference is, there is a turbo strapped to the side. This engine is not street legal for US use but since this is a 197_ 510, it is currently smog exempt. In stock form, this puts out 205 HP and 183 lbs-ft of torque. Kevin was able to aquire a complete SR-20DET motor including the complete harness and ECU. Work began in July of 2001 and many hours of blood, sweat, tears, and love was put into this car. Several modifications were required in order to get this motor to fit into the 510:

1) Install a new motor mount and reversed the center link so the motor doesn't interfere with the the steering linkage.

2) Have a custom exhaust turbo manifold fabricated.

3) Have a custom driveshaft fabricated.

4) Fuel pump upgrades.

5) Intercooler modifications.

6) Rewiring of the engine.

7) After market Greddy oil pan installed.

8) New Greddy Intake manifold.

9) New radiator custom fabricated to go with the engine.

10) The front cross member has to be reversed in order to clear the front sump pan.

11) Custom 3" exhaust run to the rear.

12) As you can see Kevin caught the Greddy bug and purchased many aftermaket parts for his set up. Keep in mind that you do not have to do. You can run the motor as is with stock intake manifold and pulleys and if you prefer you can run the turbo in it's stock location except in US 510's there is a steering box issue so you will have to convert it to Rack and pinion steering. Kevin has never been one to stay stock on anything as you find out when we finish his 300zxtt page too. As of this time, the car is just waiting for the modified radiator to be installed and the custom intercooler to be installed. Once it is finished, the car is ready to go to the body shop for the final painting and details. When the car is ready, I will be the first to take pictures and ride in it, I HOPE!!!!! Stay tuned for more information in the future, for now, enjoy the pictures and start drooling. If you are like me, I have been drooling and I am extremely jealous of Kevin.

This is the SR20DET motor from a J-spec Silvia Turbo S-13.

Kevin anticipating the hard work ahead and the satisfaction when his Dime is completed and ready to hit the road.

The above pictures are of a custom Turbo exhaust manifold custom fabricated by Mario Lozano of Toespeed Racing of Torrance, California.

Closeup shots of the motor with the intake manifold removed.

This engine was made for the Datsun 510. It is a perfect fit.

    The stock Garrett T-25 turbo.

The stock turbo sitting on top of the custom manifold. For those who are knowledgeable about the SR20-DET notice how the turbo is oriented differently from a stock application.

Upgraded Greddy Oil Pan, a must have item and also Greddy Underdrive pulleys. Notice how the crank pulley has had the power steering pump pulley machined off for a cleaner look.

Brand new, as of yet unavailable, Greddy Airinix Intake System straight from Japan.

Some of the custom modifications required for plumbing of the lines and wiring harness.

To provide the necessary fuel, the stock fuel tank was modified with a new in tank mounting bracket from a 300ZX TT and upgraded Wallbro fuel pump (255 lph).

The instruments have been supplemented with Autometer Ultralight gauges.  Ultralight speedometer and tachometer will be added soon.

Well they are finally here and the more I look at this stuff the more I have to say to myself that it was well worth the wait. This is a custom built radiator from Mario at TSR racing in torrance CA. The intercooler is a HKS core along with elbows and end tanks that I purchased
separately and had Mario weld up for me. As you can see they came out beautiful. I will post pics of what they look like in the car as soon as my photo person comes out and takes them. As of this reading they are already in the car.

May 22, 2002

Well folks we have inched a step even closer to start up. In fact I would say that this is one of the biggest steps of all. I got the car back from the exhaust shop and I must say that they did a wonderful job! below you will find various pics of the exhaust. It starts at 2.5" from the turbo and goes into the 3" inch pipe all the way out the back. I know, I know you are asking your self "will it clear the ground???" my answer to that is if it doesn't, it will eventually! Hahahaha!!! Also I have been able to get the radiator and intercooler piping installed along with the intercooler. I must say that this is a very tight fight! It amazes me how all of this stuff fits together! My friend Robert wired up the relays for my fan switch and my fuel pump. Seeing how we had the fuel pump wired up it was time to pressure test and check for leaks. It's funny though because I was feeling kind of shaky about my connections near the gas tank because of the limited space I had to put them together. As luck would have it I put power to the relay and they didn't leak! While I was patting myself on the back and giving myself a few "atta boys" I began to smell gas! I looked all over the place in the trunk area only to find out that the one fitting that I had the most access to was leaking right before the fuel filter in the engine compartment...Hahahahahahahaha go figure! turns out that I had the fitting tweaked a little bit and the 40+ plus lbs of fuel pressure let me know right away! After cleaning up and rinsing away excess fuel, I quickly re-tweaked it and everything sealed right up. As you can see from the engine photos everything is done and I have even test cranked the motor to make sure it turns over. The only thing that I am waiting on now is for the infamous Ralph K. to come and finish connecting the rest of his wires so that we may fire this beast up and from there I will finish putting the Alarm together and button up the interior. Although I would like to have my car re-painted there is simply just not enough time to do it before my first year at Shasta. My goal is to just put this car together and shake it down over the next month so I will be ready for the drive to shasta. Stay tuned for another update...k

Exhaust work was performed by ABC muffler in Benicia Ca. and whadda ya know, they just happened to be located inside of the complex where I am working on my project. They can be reached at 707-746-5488 they are really cool guys and they can't wait to see me drive by!

Update 5/27/02

That's Chester and Rob helping me wire up the few remaining ECU wires.

I am a happy camper. This is what a Dime fiend looks like when his car fires up for the first time, again. I am giddy like a school kid with a new toy.

That's right ladies and gentleman, my car is moving under its own power. No more pushing... no... the vibration you feel on the car is not from us pushing the car onto the rack but from her engine roaring. Yes, it doesn't get better than this.

Kevin would like to thank the following people for their suggestions, assistance, and patience in putting this dream together:

1) Robert Magnusen for being a good friend and always helping me out when I needed it. If it wasn't for Robert giving me storage space to work at his house and now at his shop this project would not have happened. Love ya big boy!!!

2) The now Sport Compact Car Magazine infamous Ralph Kenyon for donating his time and support and taking on the wiring harness duties. Ralph is featured in the May 02 issue of SCC dealing with the turbo silvia swap. This guy has every wire memorized and even replaces wires that he may cut or extend with the same color wire. Some may call it anal, I call it perfection! If you want a wiring harness done at a reasonable rate for your 240sx or 510 swap you can reach him at SPRISO_silvia@hotmail.com He also has a few KA 24's sitting around from previous swaps that I know he wants to sell for all you KA guys out there.

3) Dean Sherman for putting up with all of my questions before I ended up buying my penultimate cross member and 280zx rear disc brake conversion from.

4) Last but not least I would like to thank my mom for her financial input when my dumb ass over spent from time to time (LOL!!!)

5) Mario Lozano of Toespeed Racing in Torrance CA. Mario can be reached at 310-212-5104. Please keep in mind that he is very busy so when you call keep it short and to the point. If you get the machine just leave info and he will call you back.

6) Mr. J. Claypool in Sacramento CA. He did an excellent job modifying the fuel tank and he has a reasonable price. he can reached at Qship510@juno.com

7) Chester Joe of ND Auto Care INC in San Mateo Ca (650) 579-7262. Thanks for the advice and also for working out the gremlins in the wiring, crank angle sensor, and other little details to get my car to run.

8) Here is a list of the following Vendors that I purchased parts from:

http://www.sr20parts.com

http://www.sr20detperformance.com

http://www.heavythrottle.com

http://www.enjukuracing.com

I also spent a lot of time on Ebay putting sr20det in the search. I came up with a lot of parts on Ebay. Don't knock it until you try it.
